Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá
Salt Park, Zipaquirá (Cundinamarca)
Cómo llegarThe Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá, located 50 kilometers north of Bogotá, pushes the boundaries of religious architecture. This modern structure, designed by Roswell Garavito Pearl in the 1990s, is located 180 meters underground inside a salt mine that has operated since 1801. It can be found within the Zipaquirá Salt Park in the Cundinamarca department.
The history of the cathedral began in 1930, when miners built an improvised chapel in one of the tunnels to pray. However, it was closed in 1992 due to safety concerns. So, in 1995, a new church was inaugurated, with the technical direction led by Bogotá-born engineer Jorge Enrique Castelblanco Reyes.
Considered one of the most remarkable architectural and artistic achievements of Colombian architecture, the cathedral houses a rich artistic collection, especially sculptures carved from salt and marble, which lend it deep religious significance. In 2007, in a contest to choose the Seven Wonders of Colombia, the Salt Cathedral received the most votes, earning the title of Colombia’s Wonder No. 1. It was also nominated for the New Seven Wonders of the Modern World.
As part of the Salt Park thematic complex, the attraction includes a replica of the Door of St. Peter's Basilic, a tradition that symbolizes spiritual renewal and grants plenary indulgence; the Miner's Route, where visitors can experience breaking saline rock, extracting salt, and taking it home; the Monumental 180 Museum, featuring 11 salt-relief sculptures and 11 marble block sculptures created by artists from around the world; and the Mirror of Water, where salt dissolved in water (brine) and light create a perfect reflection of the salt rock, producing an optical illusion of depth and offering a magical spot for incredible photos.
The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá is more than just a tourist attraction; it is a monument of faith, history, and culture that profoundly impacts all who visit it. The cathedral's striking underground architecture and rich history are a testament to human ingenuity and spirituality. Be sure to take the opportunity to experience this iconic destination..
