Gothic Bogotá: churches that challenge time and approach the sky

Take your trip to Bogotá to visit some temples that are authentic jewels of architecture and religious art.

Bogotá is a city of contrasts, where modern and historical are founded in an architecture that breathes art and tradition. And these contrasts can be seen, above all, in our churches, which are real architectural jewels, in which a style that captivates with its imposing presence and mystic symbolism is highlighted: the Gothic. Although their temples do not strictly follow the canons of Gothic art that have emerged in Europe since the mid- 12th century, the city keeps true neo-Gothic wonders that have marked the religious and cultural history of the capital.

If you are a lover of architecture, history or simply looking for a corner of peace and beauty, here we present five churches that not only challenge time with their majesty, but will make you feel closer to the sky.

Our Lady of Carmen: Gothic icon with mudejar soul

Located in the heart of La Candelaria, this church is one of the most emblematic religious constructions in the city. Its architecture, inspired by the Gothic Italian Sienese with Arab influences, is a visual show. Its white and red stripes, which evoke a maze of stories and faith, make its facade unmistakable. Inside, the vitrals brought from Spain filter the light creating an almost heavenly atmosphere.

It is not only an architectural jewel: it is also a point of devotion for believers and it becomes more relevant in times like Holy Week. Here, art and faith are intertwined to offer a unique experience in the city.

His polychrome vitrals, made by German master Walter Wolf Wasserhouen, tell stories of faith through colors and shapes. On its main altar, carved marble, it rests the image of Our Lady of Lourdes, crowned in 1988. Its importance led it to be elevated to the Minor Basilica in 2016. If you want to discover a church that fuses history, art and spirituality, this is the place.

Our Lady of the Snow: where the Gothic meets the Byzantine

In the heart of Bogotá, this church has a history dating back to 1518. Its original structure was demolished after the 1917 earthquake, but its reconstruction, inspired by Byzantine design, gave it a new life without losing its Gothic essence.

The vitrals of its side ships, the main altar with spiral columns and its impressive pulpit of carved wood make it an indispensable jewel. It also has an image of the Holy Family that many consider miraculous.
