Panel Discussion: Exploring the underground world of Medellín's Historic Center
Santa Fe Gallery Categoría del eventoOn July 9, 2026, the Santa Fe Gallery will host the panel discussion "Exploring the Underground World of Medellín's Historic Center." This academic gathering will present the main archaeological findings uncovered during the Preventive Archaeology Programs conducted in Medellín over the last fourteen years. The activity will reveal how vestiges that narrate centuries of history—from pre-Hispanic settlements to colonial and republican structures—remain beneath the city streets.
The talk will be led by archaeologist Pablo Aristizábal Espinosa, who will share the results of research related to ancient bridges, aqueducts, covered creeks, historic buildings, and ceremonial spaces found beneath the current downtown Medellín. The encounter will offer an interdisciplinary look at urban evolution and the cultural processes that have transformed Colombian cities.
This panel discussion is part of the Katabasis program and provides an opportunity to approach urban archaeology, history, and heritage from a contemporary perspective. It is a recommended plan for students, researchers, and anyone interested in understanding the hidden layers that shape the cities' memories.
