Sanctuary of the Fallen Lord of Monserrate
📍 Carrera 2a Este # 21-48.
It is a destination that attracts both worshippers and tourists who can also enjoy a panoramic view of the city from the top of the hill. This sanctuary houses the images of the Fallen Lord – a 17th-century figure of the 'Holy Christ Fallen under the scourges and nailed to the cross,' carved in wood with some pieces of lead and silver, the work of the master Pedro de Lugo Albarracín – and a replica of the Virgin of Montserrat, identical to the one in the Monastery of Montserrat in Barcelona, Spain.
The first hermitage, completed in 1657, had to be rebuilt due to damage caused by the 1917 earthquake. The new church, built in 1925 and located on the hilltop, was designed by the architect Arturo Jaramillo Concha in a Neo-Gothic style. For the celebration of the city's fourth centenary in 1938, the church began to be illuminated at night.
The sanctuary is an ideal place for reflection, prayer, and peace of mind, especially on weekends and during special times like Holy Week and Christmas. Additionally, you'll find an excellent viewpoint offering the best view of the city.
The Sanctuary can be accessed by funicular or cable car, or even on foot along the long cobblestone path, which is a truly memorable experience for pilgrims. The carefully designed path not only facilitates access to the sanctuary but also contributes to the preservation of the natural environment.
The Fallen Lord of Monserrate holds many mysteries and is the focus of the beliefs, rituals, and miracles that many people attribute to him. Devotees make offerings such as climbing on their knees, ascending the hill blindfolded, or fulfilling other promises in exchange for favors.
