La Puerta Falsa: A culinary journey through the Bogotá of yesteryear

Just steps from the Bolívar Square, La Puerta Falsa has preserved one of Bogotá's most beloved gastronomic traditions since 1816. In its two-story venue, time seems to stand still amidst the aromas of hot chocolate, freshly prepared tamales, and recipes passed down from generation to generation.

The experience begins with a classic that defines Santa Fe cuisine: hot chocolate served with cheese and an almojábana, a simple yet deeply typical Bogotá combination. Tamales, longaniza, and envueltos also make their way to the table, evoking the breakfasts and afternoon snacks of times gone by.

And if there's room for something sweet, some of its great stars appear: cuajada with honey, marquesas, and the famous 'divorcio', an irresistible blend of cuajada, arequipe, and blackberry sauce. Each preparation adds another chapter to the culinary history of the historic center.

Visiting La Puerta Falsa is also an encounter with a traditional, bustling, and authentic Bogotá. It's a small, walk-in-only establishment that accepts cash exclusively, where waiting in line is part of the experience, and where the wait has its reward: sitting down to a plate that tastes like history.

Must-tries: Santa Fe-style hot chocolate with cheese and almojábana, tamales, and the 'divorcio' dessert.
