Known as the lungs of Bogotá, Simón Bolívar Park is a collection of several parks serving residents and visitors. This 113-hectare area comprises extensive green spaces, a significant forest cover, and infrastructure that includes pedestrian paths, tree-lined avenues, lakes, a bike path, and spaces for musical events with a capacity of 140,000 people.
It is home to the iconic Rock al Parque, Hip Hop al Parque, and Salsa al Parque festivals, and has also hosted historic rock concerts in Colombia by artists such as Metallica, Iron Maiden, Green Day, and Shakira, among many others.
Construction began in 1966, and the park has undergone several renovations that have modernized its facilities and enhanced the services it offers. Today, it is the main hub for recreation and sports in Bogotá, where cultural, sporting, musical, recreational, and educational activities are held regularly.
This park preserves a wealth of natural beauty that you should definitely explore. Among its green spaces and extensive trails, you can observe various species of migratory birds such as vireos, tanagers, and flycatchers. Additionally, the presence of exotic species like the Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) and the Spot-billed Grebe (Podilymbus podiceps) has been recorded in the vicinity of the lake. It features an island dedicated to the restoration, conservation, and observation of birdlife, located in the middle of the lake and connected by a rustic wooden bridge. It serves as a natural refuge for more than 40 species of birds.
The lake itself is one of the most popular attractions for visitors to Simón Bolívar Park. Covering 10 hectares, this body of water maintains a depth between 1 and 12 meters; aquatic demonstrations and sporting competitions are held there, and boats and oars are available for rent for short excursions.
ou should keep in mind that the Simón Bolívar Park complex is made up of other important sites in Bogotá such as: the Parque de Los Novios, the Aquatic Complex, the Popular Golf Course, the Plaza de los Artesanos, the Salitre Mágico Park and the Botanical Garden.
You can explore the park by bike, as it is part of the city’s network of bike paths.
