Black Friday Museum

The Black Friday Museum is a cultural and community space that invites visitors to explore the history, memory, and contributions of the African diaspora in Colombia from a perspective constructed by the Afro-Colombian communities themselves. Located in the Antonio Nariño district, this museum offers an immersive experience that combines heritage, identity, oral tradition, and community participation to recognize the legacy of those who, despite centuries of slavery, discrimination, and exclusion, have made fundamental contributions to the building of the nation.

The museum features six thematic rooms that guide visitors through different moments and expressions of Afro-Colombian history. The experience begins with "El Palenque," a tribute to San Basilio de Palenque as a symbol of freedom, resistance, and the preservation of African heritage, where history is presented as a living dialogue between generations.

The second room, "The Untold Story: The Slave Ship," invites visitors to understand the impact of the transatlantic slave trade and the profound social and cultural transformations this process left in Colombian territory, also highlighting the resilience and knowledge that traveled alongside those who were torn from Africa.

In "The Story Told, Mistold," the museum questions traditional narratives about Afro-descendant history and reclaims the multiple forms of resistance developed by Black communities. One of its main focuses is Afro braids, understood as cultural expressions, escape routes, codes of communication, and symbols of dignity and survival.

The tour continues with "Kilombo, Ancestral Medicine," a room dedicated to the medical and spiritual knowledge passed down from generation to generation by midwives, traditional healers, and community leaders. Here, the close relationship between nature, well-being, and traditional practices that still form part of Afro-Colombian cultural heritage is recognized.

The fifth room, the "Mary Grueso Romero Children's Room," pays homage to one of the most representative writers of Afro-Colombian children's literature. This space introduces children and families to the rich traditions of the Colombian Pacific coast through stories, games, narratives, and activities that strengthen the recognition of cultural diversity

Finally, "The Rooftop: The Pacific Coast" recreates one of the most representative spaces of traditional homes in the Colombian Pacific region as a place for gathering, knowledge sharing, and community building. Through stories, music, gastronomy, medicinal plants, and cultural expressions, visitors discover the environmental and cultural richness of one of the country's most biodiverse regions.

More than a museum, the Black Friday Museum is a space for encounter, reflection, and learning that promotes the recognition of Colombia's ethnic and cultural diversity. Each room invites visitors to listen to historically marginalized voices, strengthen collective memory, and understand how Afro-descendant communities have built, through resistance, an essential part of the identity of Bogotá and the country.
