Church of Our Lady of Egypt
📍 Carrera 4 Este # 10a-02
The Church of Our Lady of Egypt stands in the neighborhood that shares its name, in Bogotá’s Santa Fe district. In 1556, the first chapel dedicated to the Catholic faith was erected here, and just over a century later, the temple was built as we know it today
A silent witness to bloody events during the colonial era, such as the execution of patriot Juan de la Cruz Molano, an associate of Policarpa Salavarrieta, by order of the viceroy. The current building dates back to 1914, with restorations carried out in 1990. Its Neo-Grenadine style and Neo-Gothic façade earned it the designation of National Monument in 1975.
Beyond its architectural richness, this church is the heart of one of Bogotá’s most deeply rooted traditions: on the first weekend of January, the community stages performances and allegorical displays to celebrate the arrival of the Three Wise Men after the birth of the Child Jesus. It is a religious spectacle with more than a century of history that enhances popular faith.
You can get there by TransMilenio and get off at Las Aguas station. From there, start walking towards the eastern hills. It is close to Monserrate Hill.
