Teatro Colón
The Cristóbal Colón Theater, better known simply as the Colón Theater, is one of Colombia’s most iconic cultural landmarks. Built between 1885 and 1895 by the Italian architect Pietro Cantini—who also designed the National Capitol, San José Hospital, and the Templete del Libertador—it is located in the La Candelaria neighborhood, in the heart of Bogotá’s historic center. The building stands out for its neoclassical architecture, spanning 2,400 m². Its stone-carved facade reflects the Tuscan Doric style.
In 1975, the Colón Theater was declared a National Cultural Heritage Site. Its main hall seats 773 people, distributed across four levels: stalls, first, second, and third-tier boxes, and the gallery. The interior is adorned with remarkable works of art, including the fresco of the Greek Muses on the ceiling, a lamp by Swiss artist Luigi Ramelli, and a stage curtain painted in 1890 by Italian artist Annibale Gatti. This neoclassical curtain is particularly striking: conceived as a kind of operatic “game,” it features 36 characters from operas such as Hamlet, Rigoletto, and Faust, alongside depictions of indigenous people and conquistadors.
The theater is also celebrated for its exceptional acoustics, making it an ideal venue for the performing arts and musical presentations.
The Colón Theater is recognized as an architectural and historical treasure of Bogotá and Colombia and a sublime temple of the city’s cultural life.
It forms part of the Delia Zapata Olivella National Arts Center, borders the Hotel de la Ópera to the west, and faces the San Carlos Palace, home to Colombia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
