Teatro La Candelaria was founded in 1966 by a group of artists and intellectuals from the National University of Colombia and the nascent experimental theater scene. This group consciously set out to contribute to the foundation of the independent theater movement.

It began operations in a warehouse on Calle 20 and Carrera 13 in Bogotá, under the name Casa de la Cultura (House of Culture). It functioned there for two years until, due to financial reasons, it had to move. Thanks to the support of the Bogotá City Council, it acquired its own building in the La Candelaria neighborhood.

Starting in 1967, several groups began constructing and adapting new independent theater spaces throughout the country. And, in a short time, a major theater movement emerged, initially called Nuevo Teatro (New Theater).

La Candelaria's exploration of themes, situations, and characters from Colombian reality generated a surge in audience engagement, quickly sparking widespread interest in its productions. Some of its productions have been considered landmarks in Colombian and Latin American theater. La Candelaria has received numerous international awards and accolades throughout its history.

Its repertoire often includes adaptations of classics like Don Quixote, presented with a critical and satirical perspective, characteristic of the theater's management.
