Santa María del Lago Wetland District Ecological Park
📍 Cra. 76 #75a-55
The Santa María del Lago Wetland is a 10.8-hectare nature reserve, considered one of the wetlands with the best water quality in Bogotá and managed by the city's Water and Sewerage Company. It is located in the Engativá district, in the western part of the city.
Along the way, the groves of willows and alders, duckweed, rushes, and water hyacinths stand out naturally; a mix of acacias, eucalyptus, myrtle, cherry trees, and pink and orange abutilons. Birdwatchers can observe the American Coot (Fulica americana), which seems accustomed to the presence of humans; also the Red-billed Coot, coots, marsh wrens, black-crowned night herons, great kiskadees, and diving ducks. Canada geese, which migrate from North America during the northern winter, also stay there. In the waterways, you can observe fish species such as the catfish and the guapucha. According to the latest monitoring, 58 bird species have been recorded in the wetland. Located in northwestern Bogotá, it is a wildlife sanctuary that offers visitors the opportunity to connect with nature.
Explore the fascinating trails that wind through mangroves, reeds, and pools of water, and marvel at the abundance of migratory birds, amphibians, and fish that inhabit this aquatic ecosystem. With a landscape that changes with the seasons, each visit is a new adventure full of discoveries. In addition to its ecological value, it is also a cultural and educational space where visitors can participate in environmental awareness activities, birdwatching workshops, and cultural events that promote conservation and respect for the environment..
Whether you're looking for a peaceful escape in nature, an active outdoor adventure, or simply a place to disconnect and recharge, the Santa María del Lago Wetland offers an unforgettable experience that will connect you with the very essence of life and the natural beauty of Bogotá.
You can get there by TransMilenio on Calle 80 and get off at the Minuto de Dios station. Walking one block south will take you to the wetland..
