The Archaeological Museum, known as MUSA, is located in the historic house of the Marquis of San Jorge, built in 1784. Later, the property was expanded and then renovated in the 20th century to house the Sisters of the Order of the Adorers. Since 1972, it has served as the headquarters of the Fund for the Promotion of Culture and the Archaeological Museum.
Currently, it exhibits the most outstanding collection of pre-Columbian ceramics from various Colombian cultures, with more than 13,000 pieces, including basketry and metalwork. It represents cultures such as the Muisca, Chimila, Calima, Tairona, and Guane. It offers a fascinating glimpse into Colombia's ancestral history through elements of daily life and symbolic rituals.
The house of the Marquis of San Jorge is typical of the colonial era. These houses were built with an open central courtyard, around which corridors and rooms were arranged. The facades, courtyard, and rooms exceed the typical dimensions for dwellings of the period. Notable features include the carved stone column that defines the corner entrance, the lintel of the main door, and the corner balcony—all highly distinctive architectural details.
Due to the size of its collection, as well as its vast cultural, geographical, and chronological scope, the museum is considered one of the most important custodians of pre-Hispanic material culture in the country.
