The Bogotá Reader’s Manual: We invite you to explore the city's reading spots
Bogotá is gearing up for one of its most vibrant cultural seasons with the arrival of the 2026 Bogotá International Book Fair (FILBo), taking place from April 21 to May 4 at Corferias. This 'Bogotá Reader’s Manual' proposes a journey through the city’s ideal reading spots, where literature meets the essence of urban everyday life.
The first chapter of this manual begins with BibloRed, one of the most robust public library systems in Latin America. Iconic spaces such as the Virgilio Barco Library (Avenida Carrera 60 # 57-60), El Tintal Library (Avenida Ciudad de Cali # 6c - 09), the Gabriel García Márquez Library (Calle 48B sur # 21-13), and the Julio Mario Santo Domingo Library offer environments designed for quiet reading, surrounded by modern architecture and lush green areas. In these spaces, readers can immerse themselves in books while enjoying cultural services, workshops, and activities that enrich the overall experience.
Independent Bookstores
The journey continues through the independent and traditional bookstores that bring the city’s neighborhoods to life. Places like Wilborada 1047 (Calle 71 # 10-47), Garabato Libros (Carrera 19 # 34-61), or La Valija de Fuego (Carrera 7 # 45-52) do more than just sell books; they build community through cafés, literary and music clubs, and author meetups. In these spaces, the act of reading becomes an intimate and social experience, ideal for those looking to discover new voices or reconnect with the classics.
Libro al viento
For those who prefer the outdoors, Bogotá offers a network of parks perfect for opening a book under the open sky. The Simón Bolívar Metropolitan Park (Calle 63 and 53 between Carrera 66 and Avenida 68), the Lovers’ Park or Parque de los Novios (Calle 63 # 45-10), and the Enrique Olaya Herrera National Park (Carrera 7 # 37-04) become stages where reading engages in a dialogue with nature. Adding to this is the innovative network of park libraries under the Libro al Viento (Books to the Wind) program. These small cultural infrastructures provide access to books in the middle of green zones, further democratizing the joy of reading.
Libro al Viento is a literacy promotion program that seeks to meet potential readers in unconventional spaces such as public transport, waiting rooms, marketplaces, hospitals, and other locations, creating an alternative way for books to circulate. These copies are public goods; therefore, once read, they are expected to be set free so other readers can enjoy them.
A way to inhabit the city
Finally, this manual invites you to understand reading as a way of inhabiting the city. During FILBo, Bogotá transforms into a vast open book, where every corner can become a meeting point with words. Whether in a library, a bookstore, or a park, the Colombian capital offers countless ways to read and experience literature, solidifying its status as an essential cultural destination for avid readers of all ages.
